How the SPOT Satellite GPS Tracker Works!

ALERT 9-1-1

Use this function In the event of a life threatening or other critical emergency to notify emergency services of your exact location and that you need assistance. The GEOS International Emergency Response Center alerts the appropriate agencies worldwide – for example contacting 9-1-1 responders in North America and 1-1-2 responders in Europe.

How It Works: Once activated, SPOT will acquire its exact coordinates from the GPS network, and send that location along with a distress message to a GEOS International Emergency Response Center every five minutes until cancelled. The Emergency Response Center notifies the appropriate emergency responders based on your location and personal information – which may include local police, highway patrol, the Coast Guard, our country’s embassy or consulate, or other emergency response or search and rescue teams – as well as notifying your emergency contact person(s) about the receipt of a distress signal.

Important Note:

Unlimited Alert 9-1-1 usage is included as part of the low-cost SPOT service plan.

Even if SPOT cannot acquire its location from the GPS network it will still attempt to send a distress signal – without exact location – to the Emergency Response Center, which will still notify your contacts of the signal and continue to monitor the network for further messages.

CHECK IN

Also known as SPOTcheckingSM, this feature allows you to let your SPOTteam, the friends and family you have chosen as your contacts, know that all is well, notify them of your location, or save waypoints so you can review your route at a later date.

How It Works: When you press the OK button, SPOT acquires your exact location from the GPS network and routes it through the SPOT satellite network. Your contacts receive either an SMS text message on their mobile phone with your message and coordinates, or an email with your message and a link to Google Maps™ showing your exact location.

Important Note:

Unlimited Check-in usage is included as part of the low-cost SPOT service plan.

Once you have activated your SPOT account, you can change your contacts and customize your SPOTcheckingSM message at any time by use of the easy web interface.

TRACK PROGRESS

Also known as SPOTcastingSM, this feature allows friends and family to follow your progress in real time using your password, or to save waypoints so you can review your entire route at a later date.

How It Works: Once activated, SPOT acquires and sends your GPS coordinates to your SPOT account every 10 minutes. Anyone with access to your account information can log on and view your route, complete with virtual views provided by Google Maps™. To continue tracking on longer journeys, the SPOTcastingSM function must be re-activated every 24 hours.

Important Note:

Unlimited Track Progress usage is an affordable option to the low-cost SPOT service plan. Additional subscription fees apply for this function.

ASK FOR HELP

In the event of a non-life threatening emergency, you can use this function to notify your SPOTteam – the friends and family you have chosen as your contacts – that you need assistance.

How It Works: Once activated, SPOT acquires your exact location from the GPS network and routes it along with the HELP message through the SPOT satellite network every five minutes for one hour or until cancelled. Your contacts will receive an SMS text message including coordinates, or an email with a link to Google Maps™ showing your exact location.

Important Note:

Unlimited Ask For Help usage is included as part of the low-cost SPOT service plan.

Even if SPOT cannot acquire its location from the GPS network it will still attempt to send a HELP message – without exact location – to your contacts.

The SPOT GPS Satellite Tracker Network

SPOT uses the GPS satellite system to determine a user's location and the SPOT satellite network to transmit that location and the user's status. The SPOT Satellite network is a commercial network with a proven 99.4% reliability rate while processing over 6 million messages a month, the equivalent of 2.3 messages per second.SPOT GPS Satellite Network

How does the SPOT Network Work?

  • GPS Satellites provide coordinates.

  • SPOT Messenger's onboard GPS chip determines your exact location and sends your message to SPOT Satellite System.

  • SPOT Commercial Satellites relay your message to specific satellite antennas around the world.

  • Satellite antennas and supporting equipment route your message and location to the appropriate network.

  • Your message is delivered to the appropriate recipient via text message, email or emergency service notification.
